The bridge-painting project was awarded in September 2011 to SAFFO Contractors, Inc. of Wilmington, NC, in the amount of $7,750,000.

This project consists of the surface preparation and painting of all existing structural steel at the following locations: North and southbound North Channel Bridge, north and southbound Fisherman Inlet Bridge; Trestle Steel Spans; the Fishing Pier located on #1 Island and the Steel Span of the Little Creek Pier.

The majority of North Channel Bridge's Upper Truss section is wrapped in full containment, with approximately one-quarter of the structure completed through final top coat. All work under the deck of North Channel Bridge northbound has been completed, including a substantial amount of rivet and bolt replacement.

Work has continued on North Channel Bridge southbound. Spans 8 thru 14 have been completed through final top coat with cabling, rigging and decking being placed on the remaining spans. While Saffo crews continue to completely contain southbound, painting crews are diligently performing steel preparation, spot priming and top coat work for areas already contained.

Saffo will continue to press forward with production using indirect heaters to obtain proper temperatures and humidity for painting inside the containment over the winter months.
