The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has recently completed the retrofitting of various features of the interior of its tunnels.  This project was bid in two phases:  the Thimble Shoal Channel Tunnel and Chesapeake Channel Tunnels.

The scope of work consisted of the removal and replacement of deteriorated areas of wall tile on the main tunnel walls and around the wall niches, including the removal of all existing niche doors, as well as embedded and rusting niche frame angles at various locations.  Some of the niches were covered with stainless steel plates after removal of deteriorated areas of the niche components.  Additional work included the removal and replacement of the sidewalk railing, retrofit of the deteriorated areas of the concrete roadway curb, replacement of the deteriorated fresh air flue blocking, replacement of the coverplates over pull box openings and the installation of a new concrete front wall at sidewalk niches; and also, miscellaneous electrical work, including the replacement of caution lights within the tunnels and any other work involved.

Phase I - Thimble Shoal Channel Tunnel - is complete.  The contract was awarded to  Conrad Brothers of Chesapeake, VA in the amount of $3.2 million  and involved the replacement of more than 100,000 tiles as well as the replacement of a lot of original construction steel with stainless steel.

Phase II - Chesapeake Channel Tunnel - is complete.  This phase was awarded to Sun Bay Contracting of Virginia Beach, VA in the amount of $3.5 million and involved retrofit work as was done in Thimble Shoal Channel Tunnel.
