The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel recently completed the expansion and renovation of the existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel’s rest area located at the southern terminus of the Eastern Shore.  The project work was performed by Sun Bay Contracting of Virginia Beach, VA and included the following: the addition of a new women’s restroom area; demolition of the existing men’s restroom and addition of a new men’s restroom area; demolition of the existing mechanical room and addition of new mechanical and storage rooms; renovation of the existing women’s restroom with fixtures and finishes similar to the new restrooms; renovation of the remaining existing building interior; addition of a new front porch, new sidewalk adjacent to the exterior perimeter of the building and revisions to several parking spaces near the building.  Other major work included directionally drilling for a new domestic waterline and a new electrical conduit under the existing highway; the relocation of two light standards; masonry brick work; carpentry; thermal and moisture protection; addition of new roofing; new HVAC equipment and duct work; a new water heater; new electrical panel boards; a new aluminum and glass store front with sliding doors; new windows; new service doors and frames; new restroom wash stations; new fixtures; new partitions and accessories; new epoxy flooring in restrooms; new granite tile flooring; new drywall partitions and ceilings; new interior wood doors and all associated plumbing and electrical work.

This building now provides  new, larger rest area facilities for both men and women as well as a separate vending area and a dedicated area that now serves as the Eastern Shore Welcome Center, which is manned by the Eastern Shore Tourism Commission.

The History of the Eastern Shore Welcome Center
It all began as an idea for an outdoor kiosk to house brochures for local businesses and attractions in the parking lot of the North Toll Plaza Rest Area at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.  Northampton County obtained TEA-21 grant funding to construct such a kiosk; but after much discussion, it was determined that this would not serve the area well and the project was put on hold.

In 2006, a partnership was born between the Eastern Shore Tourism Commission and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, in which the CBBT agreed to permit the Eastern Shore Tourism Commission to operate a temporary welcome center within the minimal lobby space of the existing rest area building.  This pilot program served more than 8,000 travelers that passed through the rest area building between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, offering them information on the Eastern Shore and its surrounding areas.

The pilot program was continued throughout the tourist seasons of 2007 and 2008, greeting more than 10,000 and 12,000 visitors, respectively.

With the renovation of the Bridge-Tunnel's existing rest area in the North Toll Plaza parking lot looming in the future, Northampton County and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel worked to have the TEA-21 grant funds redirected to "bricks and mortar," rather than open kiosk.  This redirection of funds would allow more than $90,000 to be dedicated to construction costs of a larger, central space within the confines of the Bridge-Tunnel's rest area building, and such space would be dedicated to the Eastern Shore Tourism Commission for the full-time operation of the Eastern Shore Southern Gateway Welcome Center.

The renovations to the existing rest area building began in 2008 and the building, including the Welcome Center area, were completed in August of 2009.  The Eastern Shore Tourism Commission staffs the center with three part-time and one full-time staff.  Additional assistance is provided by a group of volunteers.

GMB Architects of Salisbury, MD was hired to design the space and L. J. Kellam Construction, LLC of Belle Haven, VA served as contractor, bringing the design of an Eastern Shore gazebo to life.

The Welcome Center is a state-of-the-art facility offering brochure information for local, Eastern Shore businesses and attractions as well as advertising opportunities for those businesses, providing an even greater exposure to the travelers who stop and visit.  Current hours of operation for the Welcome Center are Thursday through Monday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  The rest area facilities and vending area are open year-round, 24 hours a day.
