Spanning 17.6 miles at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is located in one of the harshest marine environments in the world which occasionally results in strong winds and weather conditions that require the restriction of normal traffic flow across the facility.
In an effort to maintain a high level of safety on this facility, the CBBT monitors the weather conditions and proactively implements travel restrictions based not only on current conditions but also incoming storms in the area.
While updating a recent study on the impacts of winds on different vehicles, it was determined that empty trailer weights have decreased substantially over the last few years which makes them even more susceptible to the impacts of winds. The study also identified that changing lanes or swerving, combined with high winds, greatly increases the chances being negatively impacted by the winds.
Based on the updated study, a new wind restriction policy will become effective on July 1, 2022.
